Just before the Christmas break I finished up the composition and final mix of ‘Kakek’ – a dark, magical -realist short film with elements of horror, exploring a buried colonial trauma. Written and directed by Sven Peetoom and produced by Marre Tramper. And wow! What a project. I truly enjoyed this composition process where I dove deep into finding the right vibe and sounds to fit this special story. With the help of my sampler and my synthesizer I created a soundtrack focussing on texture, rhythm, dynamics and articulation, rather than a wide array of harmonies and chord-progressions. Later on together with Alfian Emir Adytia we added some raw and sound-effect-like-sounds with his cello, with Sven’s words in the back of our minds “I want the cello sounds to physically hurt”!
Also the Foley was recorded by Yorick Sedee and me, a fun process focussing on getting under the skin of the main character Ferdi, in his attempt to getting to know about his grandfathers involvement in the Independence war in Indonesia.
KAKEK will be premiered somewhere this year, looking forward to it!
